Goat room odor control is not only for the comfort of your nose, but also for the HEALTH of the animals. Goats have a sensitive respiratory system, which makes ammonia buildup in their enclosure harmful. Everyone knows that goats (males) smell much worse than females. This is due to the fact that the glands in the body of goats produce and emit a sharp musky smell. The specific aroma attracts goats, but not owners. Therefore, if you do not plan to leave goats for a tribe, you should invite a veterinarian for castration in time.
Otherwise, the bad smell in the goat's rue is the result of the accumulation of ammonia from the urine and the decay of uncleaned feed, the lack of proper ventilation.
The principle of bedding and goat litter
While straw is one of the cheapest and most affordable bedding materials, many goat farmers consider pure straw to be the worst choice. Straw, quickly absorbing goat urine, begins to emit a very sharp and unpleasant odor, and it is inconvenient to clean it, stuck together and smelly, from floors, especially wooden ones.
Therefore, under the straw it is always better to put a layer of natural wood shavings, and if possible, pine. The method of double layering substrates of different materials is usually used in winter in the deep bedding method as a form of insulation, but it will also provide sanitary benefits in summer. Just make the layers thinner and clean more often than in winter.
Goats are famous for their intelligence and the fact that they lend themselves perfectly to training. Watch the goats - what place have they chosen for the toilet? Most likely, it will be this or that corner of the barn. Then mark the contours and pour the straw on top of the sawdust only in the area: shavings on the floor in the marked toilet and straw on top.
Leave the rest of the space under sawdust without straw. Goats will probably prefer a straw litter box, once the skill is fixed, you will have less cleaning problems.
baking soda and lime
Baking soda (sodium carbonate), although a relatively weak method for absorbing odor, nevertheless occurs in goat life hacks and is used mainly during wet weather, when it is not yet time for cleaning, and the bedding begins to emit a specific aroma. Sprinkling a handful of baking soda on the most smelly spots can reduce the smell to some extent, but not as much as we would like. The main advantage is that the baking soda can be safely left in the substrate until the next cleaning in the goat house. Goats won't get poisoned if they eat baking soda.
Another and more effective option is calcium carbonate (lime). Lime or lime powder, like soda, is added as a bedding for surgical intervention, and is also used as a hygienic agent for general cleaning. Calcium carbonate is non-toxic to goats and can be used on an ongoing basis.
A good summer practice would be cleaning once a week: clean everything, wash the floor with a strong jet from a hose, dry it, sprinkle with lime, put a layer of sawdust, and where the toilet is, a layer of straw. Simple, practical, hygienic.
