Gomel Region Prosecutor's Office: Every Fourth Crime in the Region Has the Prefix "Cyber"

7 February, Gomel. Every fourth crime in the south-eastern region is committed in the cyber sphere. Such data were presented by Gomel Region Prosecutor Oleg Avdey at a press conference on the results of work in 2024 , a BELTA correspondent reports.

Oleg Avdey generally outlined how the situation in the south-eastern region developed last year. "Thanks to the coordinated work of all services and bodies, we can state a certain positive trend in the crime situation. In particular, the total number of registered crimes by the end of 2024 decreased by almost 13%. In fact, we are seeing a decrease in crime in every area. This trend applies to offenses in public places, as well as those committed in a state ofalcohol intoxication , previously convicted and minors. The number of murders, robberies, thefts, carjackings and hooliganism has decreased. At the same time, we have no reason to be complacent," he noted.

The growth of crimes related to theft of money using information technology, including on the Internet, has a negative impact. "The growth of cybercrimes amounted to more than 18%, of which fraud - more than 4.5 times, extortion - more than twice. An increase in such crimes is noted in all regions of our country. Their share is actually the highest compared to other types. " Cybercrimes account for more than a quarter of the total number of registered crimes," explained the regional prosecutor.

According to Oleg Avdey, issues of preventing recidivism also require attention. Although the total number of such episodes has decreased, the issue of employment of previously convicted persons should be addressed. "It is worth noting the increase in the number of crimes committed by persons serving a sentence not related to imprisonment. Of course, these areas require more attention from law enforcement agencies. And this year, using the example of several districts, we plan to work out the situation on preventing recidivism and develop the necessary solutions," he emphasized. The

press conference also raised issues of crimes in the drug sphere, corruption and fraudulent schemes, identifying new episodes in the case of the genocide of the Belarusian people, etc.
