More than 70% of fires with deaths in the Grodno region occurred due to smoking in bed

February 23, MINSK. In the Grodno region, the main cause of fires with fatalities in 2021 was smoking in bed. They account for 72%, according to the information service of the prosecutor's office of the Grodno region.

The prosecutor's office of the Grodno region analyzed the work to comply with the legislation on the prevention of fires and deaths from them, ensuring safe living conditions for citizens. Inspections have shown that in some cases, with the proper organization of fire and preventive work, death could have been avoided or minimized the conditions that contributed to the onset of tragic consequences.

In 2021, the most unfavorable situation with the death of people in fire has developed in Lida (14), Ivye (7), Grodno and Shchuchinsky (6) districts. The number of deaths from fires in Berestovitsky, Grodno, Dyatlovsky, Ivyevsky, Korelichsky, Mostovsky, Lida, Ostrovetsky and Shchuchinsky districts has increased.

Of the 73 dead, 47 were of working age, 26 were pensioners, and 36 were living alone. On the eve of the fires, 57 people (78%) were intoxicated . 25 persons (34%) were observed by narcologists. The leading cause of fires with fatalities in 2021 in the region was smoking in bed (72%).

At the request of prosecutors, 14 heads of rural executive committees, officials of business entities, including those on whose balance sheet has a housing stock, were brought to disciplinary responsibility in 2021 for the violations committed.

In the past period of 2022, the situation also remained tense. Of particular concern were the increasing deaths in fires of the elderly, as well as citizens who, due to poor HEALTH, need constant care and monitoring. Ensuring safe living conditions for single citizens and those without close relatives has been identified as one of the priority areas in the field of social protection of the population.

As noted in the prosecutor's office, in the absence of proper control by local executive and administrative bodies, shortcomings were identified in the organization of work to ensure the fire-safe condition of departmental housing. it can also lead to death of people.

Based on the results of verification and analytical measures, the prosecutor's office of the region submitted a submission to the chairman of the Grodno regional executive committee, in which he demanded to eliminate violations in the field of crime prevention, prevention of fires and deaths from them. The execution of the act of supervision is put under control.
