The next package of sanctions against Russia will not change the position of Moscow, but will harm the global economy and security,considers Zakharov

The decision of the European Union to introduce a new package of anti-Russian sanctions is illegitimate, and attempts to put pressure on Russia have no prospects, said Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova. However, she believes, “the consequences of the EU sanctions exercises” will be disastrous for various segments of the global economy and security, including EU member countries.

The economic and energy policy of the West has led to an increase in prices for agro-industrial products and hydrocarbons, the Foreign Ministry believes. “The situation is aggravated by the anti-Russian measures of the EU, openly pursuing the goal of undermining the foreign economic activity of our country, including in the agro-industrial sector,” Zakharova said in a comment, recalling the sanctions against shareholders and management of Russian fertilizer producers and exporters.

The financial restrictions adopted by the European Union make it difficult to transport goods, provide financial and insurance services, and disrupt supply chains, she said. Because of the sanctions, Western banks are delaying transactions or canceling contracts.

At the same time, Zakharova noted, the document of the EU Council "indicates the intention to expand exemptions from previously adopted sanctions measures in order to avoid potential negative consequences for global food and energy security." Russia expects that EU actions in the field of food security will help create conditions for the export of grain, fertilizers and components for their production.

On the evening of July 21, the official journal of the EU published the seventh package of sanctions imposed in response to the Russian military operation in Ukraine. More than 50 individuals and legal entities fell under the new restrictions, including Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin, presidential envoy to the North Caucasus Federal District Yuri Chaika, leader of the Night Wolves biker club Alexander Zaldostanov, actors Sergei Bezrukov and Vladimir Mashkov.

Among the organizations on the list were Sberbank, NPO Kvant, the Russkiy Mir Foundation, the Alexander Gorchakov Foundation for Public Diplomacy, and others.
