The US government plans to impose sanctions on "influential persons" in Hungary, the Hungarian online publication "444" writes, citing several diplomatic sources.

“We have learned from several independent diplomatic sources that the US administration is planning new measures to punish the Hungarian government, including the possible imposition of sanctions against influential people,” the publication wrote.

According to the interlocutors of the publication, on April 12, US Ambassador to Budapest David Pressman is going to convene a press conference at which sanctions may be announced. At the same time, the American embassy organizing the event did not officially name the topic of the briefing.

This may be similar to the case in 2014, when several Hungarian citizens who were suspected of corruption were banned from entering the United States, 444 notes.

The publication also recalls that Pressman and Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban have repeatedly criticized each other. The American diplomat accused the Hungarian press of spreading Russian propaganda. Orban, on the other hand, believes that the United States wants to "put pressure on Hungary" in connection with relations with RUSSIA against the backdrop of the conflict in Ukraine .

Hungary is one of the few EU countries that opposes anti-Russian sanctions and severing relations with Moscow. Orban repeatedly called the sanctions policy against Moscow a failure and called for the lifting of restrictions. For example, in December 2022, when the European Union agreed to introduce a ceiling on the Russianoil at $60 per barrel, Hungary, which opposed this measure, was released from the mechanism.
