For the first time since the beginning of the conflict in Ukraine , the European Commission proposed imposing sanctions against a number of Chinese companies for supplying equipment to Russia, which is allegedly used for military purposes. This was reported by the Financial Times with reference to an internal document.
The discussion of the sanctions list will take place in mid-May, it includes seven Chinese companies: 3HC Semiconductors, King-Pai Technology, as well as Hong Kong's Sinno Electronics, Sigma Technology, Asia Pacific Links, Tordan Industry and Alpha Trading Investments. All companies work in the field of development of semiconductors, microchips and electronics, notes FT.
“Given the key role of electronic elements for use by the Russian military-industrial complex <...>, it is also appropriate to include some companies [in the sanctions list] in third countries <...> that are involved in the development, production and supply of electronic components for the military -industrial complex of Russia,” says the draft document prepared by the European Commission.
Western countries have repeatedly called on CHINA not to help Russia with arms supplies. US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken pointed out that "if the information about the deliveries is confirmed, then this could create a serious problem for us and our relations." Representatives of Beijing called reports of an intention to supply arms to Moscow as disinformation.
China, after the start of the conflict in Ukraine, did not begin to impose sanctions against Russia and many times came up with peace initiatives. So, on the anniversary of the outbreak of hostilities, Beijing outlined its 12-point peace plan. Among the proposals: respect for the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all countries, abandoning the Cold War mentality, cessation of hostilities, resumption of negotiations and lifting of sanctions.
President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky responded by saying that he considers the plan more of a statement of thoughts. He noted that the Chinese proposals do not contain a clause on the withdrawal of Russian troops from the territory of Ukraine, and therefore this plan is unrealizable. US President Joe Biden called the Chinese plan beneficial only to Russia.
