The European Parliament called on the EU to adopt the tenth package of sanctions against Russia

The deputies of the European Parliament by a majority vote adopted a resolution "On preparations for the EU-Ukraine summit", in which they called on the European Union "to immediately adopt the tenth package of sanctions against Russia." This message was published on the website of the European Parliament.

"Parliament also calls for sanctions against companies such as Lukoil and Rosatom that are still present on the EU market," the statement said.

It is proposed to introduce a complete embargo on the import of fossil fuels and uranium from Russia, as well as completely refuse to receive gas through the Nord Stream and Nord Stream-2 gas pipelines. The resolution was adopted by 489 MEPs, 36 voted against, 49 abstained.

In addition, the European Parliament called on the Ukrainian authorities "to carry out significant reforms as soon as possible" so that Ukraine meets the criteria for membership in the European Union. The deputies expressed their commitment to the future membership of Ukraine in the EU after filing an application on February 28, 2022.

On December 16, 2022, the Council of the European Union approved a new sanctions package aimed at the Kremlin. The purpose of the restrictive measures is "to weaken the ability of the Russian government to finance aggression against Ukraine."

The list includes about 200 people and organizations, including ministers, deputy prime ministers and other members of the country's leadership. Also under blocking sanctions were the All-Russian State Television and Radio Broadcasting Company, political parties, including United Russia, and several banks, in particular the Far East.

The official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry, Maria Zakharova, said that the previously adopted ninth package of sanctions would cause socio-economic problems in the European Union itself. She noted that due to restrictive measures, European countries were faced with energy shortages and “sanctions inflation”.
