EU countries should discuss the issue of mandatory vaccination, said the head of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen. The video recording of the press conference was published on Twitter by the head of the EC.

According to her, 77% of the adult population of the EU, or 66% of all inhabitants, are now vaccinated. However, this is not enough, more than a third of Europeans, and these are millions of people, remain unprotected despite the fact that there is no shortage of vaccines.

“Yes, there are very young children or people with special health conditions who cannot be vaccinated, but the vast majority can. Therefore, I think it would be understandable and normal to discuss the issue of mandatory vaccination in the EU. I think that such a discussion is needed,” she said.

Von der Leyen stressed that this is her personal opinion.

Europe is now facing a double challenge in the fight against COVID-19: a new wave of the Delta strain and the emergence of the Omicron strain.
