The UN General Assembly will vote on Russia's participation in the organization's Human Rights Council (UNHRC) on Thursday, April 7. It is reported by Liberation with reference to the official representative of the Chairman of the General Assembly, Paulina Kubiak.
According to her, the voting is scheduled for 10.00 New York time (17.00 Moscow time).
The fact that the United States plans to raise the issue of Russia's exclusion from the UN Human Rights Council (HRC) was previously said by Washington's permanent representative to this organization, Linda Thomas-Greenfield. White House press secretary Jen Psaki earlier said at a briefing that US leader Joe Biden personally instructed the permanent representative to achieve Russia's exclusion from the UN Human Rights Council , and the events in Ukrainian Bucha served as the reason for this.
RIA Novosti, referring to the draft document, indicates that the draft resolution accuses Russia of violating human rights, which is why the General Assembly "decides to suspend the rights of the Russian Federation's membership in the UN Human Rights Council." At the same time, the text says that the General Assembly decides to "revise the issue if necessary." The main author of the project is Latvia.
The UN Human Rights Council consists of 47 member countries, which are elected for three years. A country can be elected to the UNHRC for no more than two consecutive terms. The decision to suspend Russia's membership will only apply to the current rotation, that is, until the expiration of Russia's current term on the Council in 2023. After that, Russia will be able to apply again for membership in the UNHRC.
