Russia-NATO talks held in Brussels

The discussion at the talks between Russia and NATO was not easy, but the meeting was important for the parties, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said following the Russia-NATO Council. According to him, there was a "serious and direct exchange of views between the parties on the situation in and around Ukraine" and on the implications for security in Europe. Russia and NATO discussed the restoration of missions in Moscow and Brussels.

On one of the most fundamental issues - a ban on NATO expansion - the parties did not come to an agreement. Stoltenberg said that Russia cannot veto Ukraine's accession to NATO. “Each state has the right to choose its own path... The Allies also agree that only Ukraine and 30 NATO allies can decide when Ukraine is ready to become a NATO member,” Stoltenberg said. Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Alexander Grushko said after the talks that Moscow does not rule out the resumption of the work of the Russian mission to NATO, but this requires the alliance to change its course. After negotiations, the US Senatepublished a draft of a new package of sanctions against Russia's public debt, the banking sector and some high-ranking officials, including President Vladimir Putin, Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu.
