The new package of EU sanctions may include a ban on the import of diamonds from RUSSIA. Back in March, the United States made such a decision.

Within a few days, the European Commission will begin consultations with representatives of the EU countries on a new package of sanctions against Russia, which may include a ban on the import of polished diamonds. This is reported by Politico, citing four EU diplomats.

According to the interlocutors of the publication, the European Commission is preparing a package of new restrictive measures, which it intends to discuss with the ambassadors of the EU countries on Friday, September 23.

Diplomats expect that among the list of proposed measures will be a cap on Russian oil prices , which is currently being discussed in the G7, as well as an expansion of the list of sanctions against Russian individuals, a ban on the import of Russian diamonds and other luxury goods.

The HEAD of European diplomacy, Josep Borrell, who is in New York, said that he would hold a meeting on the evening of September 21 with the ambassadors of the EU countries in connection with the announcement of partial mobilization in Russia.

“Tonight, right after Putin’s words, I am convening an emergency informal meeting of EU foreign ministers to agree on a common line,” Borrell said. According to him, European countries "will not be intimidated" and "will continue to fully support Ukrainian sovereignty and democracy."

On the partial mobilization in Russia, President Vladimir Putin announced on the morning of September 21. It will affect 300 thousand people and only those who have already served and have the specialty necessary for the armed forces, Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu said.

Russia has been conducting a special operation in Ukraine since February 24. In response, Western countries, including the US, the EU and their allies, have imposed several packages of sanctions against Moscow . Washington imposed a ban on the import of diamonds from Russia back in March, and the Russian diamond mining company ALROSA fell under US and Canadian sanctions.

In early September, the G7 countries (usa, UK, CANADA, Japan, France, Germany and Italy) agreed to impose a price ceiling on Russian oil in order to reduce Russia's income and its ability to finance hostilities in Ukraine. The price ceiling has not yet been determined, it is expected to be set by December, when EU restrictions on Russian oil purchases come into play. The US Treasury has already announced that those who buy oil from Russia above the marginal price may fall under US penalties and sanctions.

Russia will not supply energy to countries that, by political decisions, will violate existing contracts, Putin said, commenting on the West's initiative at marginal prices. He said that those who are trying to impose something on Russia are "not in a position to dictate their will" and should change their minds.
