The actions of the United States and its allies in Northeast Asia pose a threat to international peace and security in the region, Russian Permanent Representative to the UN Vasily Nebenzya said at a meeting of the world organization's Security Council.
RUSSIA opposes any military activity that poses a threat to the security of the Korean Peninsula and neighboring countries, the diplomat stressed. The United States, Japan and South Korea regularly escalate the situation around it, including regional military exercises within the concept of containing the DPRK, Nebenzya added. He recalled the summer exercises with the participation of American bombers in the airspace of SOUTH KOREA and the dispatch of an American Ohio-class nuclear submarine to the waters of the state.
The policy of tough restrictions against North Korea has exhausted itself, Nebenzya said. He called the increased pressure on Pyongyang through sanctions "inhumane." “We are convinced that the policy of strict restrictions has exhausted itself long ago. It fundamentally contradicts the tasks of restoring confidence,” the Russian representative said.
The diplomat's statement was made against the backdrop of the Ulchi Freedom Shield exercise, which is taking place in the area of the Korean peninsula. The maneuvers began on August 21, they involve the army, navy and special forces of South Korea and the United States. The military practice in maneuvering and hand-to-hand combat, reconnaissance skills and first aid skills. Maneuvers take place both at sea and on land. They must end on August 31st.
The exercises began shortly before the launch of the North Korean reconnaissance satellite into space: the Manningyon-1 apparatus was supposed to be put into orbit using the Chollima-1 launch vehicle, but the attempt ended in failure.
North Korea made its first attempt to launch the same satellite in May. Then the US, Japan, South Korea and the UN condemned the country, saying that the use of ballistic missile technology grossly violates numerous UN Security Council resolutions and could destabilize the security situation in the region and beyond. North Korea responded by saying that Pyongyang has a legitimate right to space exploration.
