Against the background of the omicron strain of coronavirus, children may develop inflammation of the larynx and trachea - laryngotracheitis, an infectious disease specialist, pediatrician, professor at the Department of Pediatrics of the MONIKI named after M.V. M.F. Vladimirsky Elena Meskina.
“This feature of Omicron is that children often began to show “classic” symptoms of respiratory infections, including laryngotracheitis. In general, we do not note that the severity of "croup" (a respiratory syndrome with inflammation of the larynx, in which children develop a barking cough and shortness of breath. -) and laryngitis with COVID-19 in children is more than with other infections. But in general, signs of “croup” and violations of laryngeal obstruction are observed with omicron, ”said Meskina.
According to the doctor, with proper and quick treatment, it is possible to quickly bring the child out of this state. “And if the following symptoms appear: a rough barking cough, a noisy breath, you need to see a doctor and go to the hospital. Because the inhalations that are done in this case are definitely necessary. And it is fundamentally important to evaluate the effectiveness of inhalations and treatment,” she added.

As pediatrician, candidate of medical sciences Grigory Sheyanov told RBC, laryngotracheitis is a complication that can occur with any viral infection, so the coronavirus will not be an exception.
He noted that this condition is most dangerous for children under the age of five, who, against the background of acute laryngotracheitis, can develop acute stenosis of the larynx - what used to be called "croup". “Children may start to choke, intensive care, oxygen may be required. But not for the same reasons that adults with viral pneumonia require it, but because of airway obstruction, ”the doctor concluded.

Pediatrician, doctor of medical sciences Sergey Tokarev told URA.RU about the possible development of laryngotracheitis in children under five years of age when infected with the omicron strain. According to him, laryngotracheitis develops most often in boys under five years of age and can lead to stenosis of the larynx or "croup".
“Earlier, in young children, it [laryngotracheitis] often developed with parainfluenza, but now the number of such cases is also growing with omicron, since the new strain actively multiplies in the upper respiratory tract and causes their acute inflammation,” Tokayev noted.
He stressed that laryngeal stenosis develops in a few hours, so you need to have time to hospitalize the child in time. Among the symptoms of stenosis, the doctor named a pale or bluish nasolabial triangle, a “barking” cough, a hoarse voice, rapid and wheezing breathing, and shortness of breath.
