In December, 225 thousand migrants arrived at the southern US border from Mexico, which was the highest monthly figure since 2000, CNN reports, citing preliminary data from the Department of Homeland Security.
In the last month of winter, more than 10 thousand people crossed the border daily; this influx continued until recently, when the number of migrants began to decline.
Almost 60% of all migrants illegally crossed the US border through the cities of Tucson (Arizona) and Del Rio (Texas), where, according to CBS, citing the Department of Homeland Security, between 2,000 and 3,000 illegal crossings are recorded daily.
Cities located far from the Mexican border are also experiencing difficulties due to the influx of migrants. Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson told CNN that the city's capacity has "reached its limits" and that without a coordinated solution, the migrant crisis will "destroy the local economy." Denver will spend about 10% of its city budget on migrant assistance in 2024 , Mayor Mike Johnston believes.
During 2023, the United States has repeatedly recorded an increase in the number of people wishing to enter the country; an influx, in particular, has been noted on the border with Mexico. In May, the country ceased to operate a special regime on deportation, introduced under former President Donald Trump due to the CORONAVIRUS pandemic, under the so-called Article 42. According to it, migrants could be denied asylum due to the threat of the spread of covid-19 . Incumbent leader Joe Biden's administration has introduced new requirements , such as the deportation of those who do not qualify for asylum. In December, The Wall Street Journal reported that the Biden administration had agreed to a new mechanism to expedite the removal of migrants, similar to Title 42.
On December 27, US Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in Mexico City. According to Mexican President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, the parties entered into “important agreements for the benefit of our peoples and states.” US officials said Mexican authorities have informed them of new measures to combat the migration crisis.
