Ukrainian authorities are outraged by former German Chancellor Angela Merkel's comments that Poland and the Baltic states share responsibility for the outbreak of the Russian-Ukrainian conflict, Politico reports, citing an unnamed high-ranking Ukrainian official.

"It's unacceptable and, frankly, disgusting," he said.

Merkel previously stated that Poland , Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia opposed her proposed new format for direct dialogue between the European Union and Russian President Vladimir Putin on the Ukrainian issue in 2021, which partially influenced the "subsequent developments."

Estonia and Poland reacted critically to the German politician's opinion. Marko Mihkelson, Chairman of the Estonian Parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, stated that her accusations against the Baltic states and Warsaw for the development of the Ukraine crisis  were "extremely unpleasant." And former Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki called Merkel "one of the most damaging German politicians to Europe in the last century."

The Kremlin also claimed that the Baltic states' "unbridled" policies had made Brussels "hostage" in the Ukrainian conflict. "One can imagine that Ms. Merkel is right in this regard," added Russian presidential press secretary Dmitry Peskov .
