The number of deaths from COVID-19 in Russia hit a record since May

Over the past day, 107 people have died from coronavirus in Russia, the operational headquarters reported on Telegram. The figure was a record since May 17, when 110 people died.

The daily number of new cases of coronavirus infection was 53,045 with 200,000 tests. Most of the cases were in Moscow (6647), St. Petersburg (3897) and the Voronezh region (1993).

The number of hospitalized people decreased by 7.1% compared to September 20, 4,321 people were admitted to hospitals. 59,718 people recovered, which is 14.4% more than the day before.

Virologists have estimated the risk of an increase in mortality from COVID-19 to 200 per day

September 18, the head of the Center. Gamalei Alexander Gunzburg said that the death rate from coronavirus has increased by 3.5 times in recent days. He predicted that the level could rise to 200 deaths per day, and then reach a plateau.

Virologists interviewed by RBC questioned the strong increase in mortality. Scientific director of the Mechnikov Research Institute of Vaccines and Serums, Academician of the Russian Academy of Sciences Vitaly Zverev pointed out that now 40 times fewer patients need hospitalization. “I don’t think the death rate will increase. The number of sick people is decreasing – naturally, the number of deaths should also decrease. Most likely, we are on a plateau and we should not expect an increase in mortality and an increase in morbidity, ”he added.

Anatoly Altshtein, chief researcher at the Gamaleya Research Center for Epidemiology and Microbiology, said that the number of deaths is unlikely to increase significantly. “After some time, a recession should begin. But it is difficult to predict exactly when it will start,” he said.
