The journalist of the publication reproached Wilson that Moscow continues to receive "millions of pounds" for flying over its territory, and Air India does not dare to refuse it. In response, the head of the airline said that Air India was "open to fly over Russia to the UK and the US" if "that's how the winds blow". According to him, such flights are the most economical.

He recalled that the UK, despite the ban on oil and gas imports from Russia, continues to buy Russian hydrocarbons. Wilson also wondered how much investment continues to flow into the British budget from the Russian diaspora.

“I absolutely do not support the conflict. But aviation is probably the biggest driver for global peace and interconnectedness because it brings people closer, blends cultures, and minimizes humanity's natural pitting of "us" and "them," the head of Air India said.

The United States , along with the European Union and partner countries, closed the skies to Russian aircraft in early March 2022, shortly after the outbreak of hostilities in Ukraine. The flight ban affected passenger and cargo, as well as charter and scheduled flights. Russia responded by banning flights from more than 30 countries, including EU states.

India is one of the world's largest economies, which did not impose sanctions against Moscow after the start of the special operation. On the contrary, according to the results of last year, Russia entered the top five largest trading partners of India. Thus, in the period 2021-2022, Russia was in 18th place in terms of imports, it accounted for goods worth $9.86 billion. However, in the incomplete fiscal year 2022-2023, imports reached $39.8 billion, mainly due to growth export of Russian hydrocarbons.
