Vietnam: African swine fever cases on the rise

According to the Department of Animal Health, recent outbreaks have primarily occurred on small livestock farms that purchase breeds of unknown origin and have poor barn hygiene. Hidden epidemics, slow reporting of outbreaks, resale, slaughter of sick pigs suspected of being infected, and the disposal of dead pig carcasses are common. In many communities, farmers are reluctant to use the ASF vaccine on their pigs. This is because its widespread use is only authorized from July 2023, the ASF vaccine is not on the mandatory vaccination list, and the price of the vaccine is still relatively high.
