Gulnara Kerimov, the daughter of sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov, has filed a lawsuit against Switzerland over sanctions. This was announced by Asari Legal, the law firm representing Kerimova.
"Asari Legal represents Gulnara Kerimova in investment arbitration proceedings against the Swiss Confederation under the Agreement between the USSR and Switzerland on the Promotion and Reciprocal Protection of Capital Investments of December 1, 1990," the publication states.
The dispute concerns investment protection and compliance with the state's international obligations under sanctions. Asari Legal noted that the case is a precedent-setting issue for international investment practice.
According to Global Arbitration Review, the lawsuit was filed over the freezing of Kerimova's investments in luxury real estate. The Pravo portal, citing GAR, reported that the claims concern the freezing of assets registered through Swiss companies and related to Kerimova's real estate investments, presumably located in France.
In the fall of 2022, the US imposed sanctions against members of the family of Russian senator and billionaire Suleiman Kerimov: his wife Firuza, daughters Gulnara and Amina, and son Said. At the same time, restrictions were imposed on four French real estate companies, which, according to the US Treasury Department, belong to Gulnara Kerimova. These are Service Immobiliere Antibes SAS, Service Immobiliere et Gestion SAS, VH Antibes SAS, and Villa Lexa Estates SAS. Following the start of Russia's military operation in Ukraine , Kerimov was also subject to sanctions by the European Union, Switzerland, the UK , CANADA, and several other countries.
