Meat production in Germany fell by 2.4% in a year

German commercial slaughterhouses produced 7.6 million tonnes of MEAT in 2021, down 2.4% from 2020 volumes. This was reported on February 8 by the TopAgrar online publication, citing data from the country's Federal Statistical Office (Destatis).

Pork production decreased by 2.9% in a year. The amount of meat produced was just under 5.0 million tons. The downward trend in pork production has been maintained for the fifth year in a row. Since 2016, pork slaughter in Germany has decreased by 11%.

The number of cattle slaughtered in 2021 decreased by less than 1% compared to 2020. The produced slaughter volume of 1.1 million tons of beef was 1.8% lower than last year. Compared to 2016, beef production decreased by 7.1%.

The volume of poultry meat produced decreased by 1.6% in 2021 to just under 1.6 million tonnes. The reason for the decline, in particular, is the decline in the production of turkey meat (turkey meat) by 7.4%.

Recall, according to the forecast of the European Commission, in Europe the trend of a slight decrease in meat consumption will continue in the period from 2021 to 2031.

In the coming years, meat consumption will decrease slightly, and the transition of Europeans to poultry meat will continue. Meat consumption in the EU is expected to fall from 69.8 kg in 2018 to 67 kg retail weight per capita in 2031.

This trend is contrary to the global trend. By 2031, global meat consumption is expected to continue to grow (+1.4% per annum) due to population growth and rising incomes in developing countries.
