The Kholmogory breed of cattle was bred in the Arkhangelsk region and received its name from the village of Kholmogory, located in this region. it is the result of a long selection of the most adapted and hardy animals. The history of the breed dates back to the 17th century, when Russian merchants brought cattle from Norway and Holland to these places.
At first, the breed did not have clear standards and was represented by various types of livestock, which over time crossed with each other. However, by the middle of the 19th century, work was carried out on selection and improvement of the breed under the leadership of the famous breeder N.I. Bortnevsky.
Today, Kholmogory cattle breed animals are characterized by high body weight and excellent working qualities. Adult animals can reach a weight of up to 1100 kg. They are distinguished by a wide chest and strong muscles, the coat is short and dense from dark brown to black. An important advantage of the breed is the high MILK productivity of cows - up to 4 thousand liters of milk per year with a fat content of about 4-5%.
The Kholmogory breed of cattle is of great importance in the agriculture of the region. These animals are actively used for milk and MEAT production. In cold winters, they are able to graze in the snow, which saves on feed costs.
