Producers saw risks of shortage of casings for sausages and sausages

The EU ban on the supply of casings for sausages and frankfurters may lead to a reduction in the range of these products. MEAT processors recognize dependence on imports,

Russian producers of sausages and frankfurters may face difficulties due to the EU ban announced in early April on the supply of casings to RUSSIA necessary for the production of these products, market participants told RBC. The European Union introduces a ban on the supply of artificial sausage casings from hardened protein and cellulose materials from July 10, 2022.

it was Europe that was the main supplier of sausage casings to Russia. In 2021, the EU accounted for almost 73% of imports of these products in physical terms: in 2021, Russia , according to the Federal Customs Service, imported about 8 thousand tons of casing for $110 million, of which 5.9 thousand tons for $82, 7 million from the European Union. Among the largest suppliers were Spain, Germany, France, Belgium and Poland.

What threatens the ban on the import of casing

The casing is a necessary component for the production of sausages, it gives the products a shape and protects them from environmental influences, is explained on the website of the Norilsk meat processing plant. Initially, in the manufacture of sausages, natural casings (from the organs of domestic animals) were more often used, but as the demand for sausage products increased, the production of artificial casings using natural materials (collagen or cellulose), as well as synthetic ones (for example, from polyamide and polypropylene) began to actively develop. .

Due to sanctions imposed by the EU, meat processing plants will soon face a “lack of adequate volume” of casings for various types of sausages in the medium term, says Alexander Polyakov, DIRECTOR of the printing company Kyuko Tamp. His company is engaged in printing on the packaging of goods for the food, medical, cosmetic industries and household chemicals, among its clients is the Cherkizovo group, which is one of the five largest producers of sausages and other meat products.

Domestic production will not be able to fully meet demand, and the lack of packaging materials and components for their production will lead to "a significant reduction in the range of food products," Polyakov warns. He gives examples: in the production of boiled sausages and cheeses, a multilayer polyamide casing is used.

The only major manufacturer, the Atlantis-Pak plant in Rostov-on-Don, according to Polyakov, “does not have the capacity to meet the nationwide demand and, in any case, will soon face a lack of components for production, most of which are imported from Europe". Even today, this plant does not have the ability to produce some types of sausage casings, says Polyakov.

Collagen casings, which are used in the production of all types of sausages, are produced by the only plant in the Leningrad Region, which "does not cover even 10% of the Russian market and works mainly on imported raw materials," RBC's interlocutor continues. Viscose-reinforced casings, which are used for the production of boiled-smoked, raw-smoked, dried, ham sausages and cheeses and occupy about 60% of the Russian market, come to Russia exclusively from abroad (they are produced in the usa , Germany, Spain and Japan). The situation is similar with cellulose casings for boiled sausages, which come from Germany, Spain and the USA.

Under current contracts, deliveries are possible until July 10, but foreign packaging manufacturers have already received a directive not to accept orders from Russia from April 9, says Polyakov. Those Russian companies that managed to order the casing up to this point, according to him, will have enough stocks for about three months, and then there may be a shortage that will affect production: manufacturers can switch “to primitive materials or abandon some products . “In the short term, we will see a sharp reduction in the assortment of sausages on the shelves of Russian stores,” Polyakov sums up.

What do meat-packing plants and officials say

It is difficult to estimate the share of imported casings used by domestic meat plants - it differs for each enterprise, says Sergey Yushin, HEAD of the executive committee of the National Meat Association. He admits that domestic enterprises mainly produce natural casings, but it is impossible to completely replace imports at once. Therefore, manufacturers of sausages and other meat products are looking for alternative ways to deliver these components to Russia through other countries that have not imposed sanctions against Russia, or will replace the casing, and something, according to Yushin, may have to be abandoned.

In the Cherkizovo group, they indicated that in its production, artificial cellulose casing is dependent on imports, without specifying what share of the assortment they are talking about. The company is looking for alternative ways to replace this packaging and does not expect the risks of stopping production, the representative of the group reassures.

The Prodo group, which produces sausages under the Klinsky brand, produces most of its sausage products in imported casings, although the company also works with Russian manufacturers, its representative says (he does not specify a specific share). “The ban on the import of casings from Europe, of course, forces us to look for alternative suppliers. However, in connection with the new sanctions, we do not plan to reduce the range or temporarily stop the production of any commodity items,” the representative of Prodo assured, adding that problems with casing replacement will not lead to an increase in the cost of sausage. The group's enterprises will have enough stock of this component until at least September 2022 - this gives enough time

In 2021, China was in tenth place in terms of supplies of sausage casings to Russia: 157.9 tons of this product were imported from there for $3.4 million. Among the countries that did not impose a ban on imports to Russia, Serbia was also a major supplier (1 .3 thousand tons by $15.8 million), only Spain was ahead of it.

Domestic production of sausage casings “together with imports” makes it possible to meet the needs of producers, and companies solve supply problems “by reorienting to other markets and searching for alternative suppliers,” an optimistic representative of the Ministry of Agriculture. Sanctions prohibiting the import of casings for sausages from the EU are new opportunities for Russian producers, a representative of the Atlantis-Pak plant said. He is confident that the polymer casing for sausages produced by his company can replace the imported one.
