Lean hog futures on the CME were mixed on Wednesday, with near-term futures supported by higher money indexes, while October futures were lower on expectations of a seasonal increase in hog supplies towards the fall.
Supplies are still a bit tight, analysts say. Pig producers have been battling a disease that has recently reduced the available supply of pigs, pushing up the price of ready-to-sell pigs. It is likely that manufacturers may take longer than usual to restock.
The nearest August CME futures strengthened by 0.525 cents to 119.125 cents per pound, which signals to traders that the price index will soon peak, although it continues to grow, and the widening discount should limit sellers' interest in futures for the leading month.
Pig slaughter is likely to increase in the near future, with growth picking up by mid-August. The expectation of a surge in production, as well as lower demand for various grilled cuts and bacon, is reflected in large discounts on fall and winter lean pork futures.
A report from the USDA showed that pork stocks are declining.
Pork stocks fell less than average in June to 541.0 million pounds, 5.1 million pounds less than in May.
