The Russian Ministry of Agriculture has approved a new list of breeds for livestock breeding

On May 14, 2025, the Russian Ministry of Agriculture approved a new document that includes an updated list of animal species, breeds, and crosses used in livestock breeding. The order, registered by the Ministry of Justice on March 31, 2025, will come into force on September 1, 2025, and will replace the previous document of June 1, 2020. The innovation implies a more detailed classification of breeding material, including not only animal species, but also specific breeds and crosses.

The new list presents all the main areas of breeding:

  • Cattle (80 breeds)
  • Goats (35 breeds)
  • Pigs (27 breeds)
  • Horses, buffalos, camels, donkeys
  • Poultry (chickens, geese, turkeys, guinea fowl)
  • Fur animals and minks
  • Snails and bees
  • Fish species including Amur, Kaluga, Bester, Carp and Sturgeon (Russian and Siberian), Rainbow Trout and others.

In addition, from 2026, the Ministry of Agriculture plans to link the provision of state support with mandatory animal labeling, which will require registration of livestock in the Federal State Information System "VetIS" and, from January 1, 2027, in the Federal System of Breeding Resources. From March 2024 , mandatory digital labeling of farm animals will also be introduced in RUSSIA. At present, 15.7 million heads of cattle , 28.4 million pigs and 560.8 million birds have been registered. Camels, deer, rabbits, bees and fur animals must also be registered by September 1, 2025, and small cattle by December 1. The Ministry is already applying administrative sanctions for violations of labeling rules.
