Prosecutor of Vitebsk region: individual work should be strengthened in crime prevention

Against the background of a general decrease in the level of crime in the Vitebsk region, prevention should be strengthened, including serious and especially serious crimes, with an emphasis on individual work with citizens. This opinion at a press conference, answering a question from a BelTA correspondent about measures and ways to prevent crimes, was expressed by the prosecutor of the Vitebsk region Igor Ukrainets.

"This year, the overall crime rate has decreased by 16% compared to the same period last year. Crimes such as murder, intentional infliction of grievous bodily harm, robbery, extortion are not allowed. Less crimes are committed while intoxicatedand committed by previously convicted persons. Despite the positive results achieved, there are problems in the region that still need to be worked on. The criminogenic situation is influenced by a high number of property thefts, thefts: this is more than 50% of the number of all crimes committed in the region. There is also a problem in the prevention of serious and especially serious crimes. In this area, it is necessary to maximize the work of all subjects of prevention, which include local authorities, law enforcement agencies, where the prosecutor's office acts as a coordinator. In my opinion, in order to improve the situation with such types of crimes, as well as with others, it is necessary to raise individual prevention to a high level," Ihor Ukrainiants emphasized.

He added that the increase in serious and especially serious crimes is due to drug trafficking. The drug business has moved from "hand to hand" format to the virtual space, and more and more young people, including minors, are involved in this dangerous sphere. Since the beginning of the year, law enforcement agencies of the Vitebsk region have already identified 84 crimes related to drug trafficking, which is twice as many as in the same period of 2021. In order to prevent such crimes, it is necessary to conduct explanatory conversations as often as possible, primarily with schoolchildren and students of colleges and universities, to tell them about criminal liability, which comes from the age of 14, and what terms threaten for the distribution of illegal substances.
