The European Union will soon present the 12th package of sanctions against RUSSIA due to military actions in Ukraine , the HEAD of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen said on the social network X (formerly Twitter). On October 4, she came to Kyiv for the sixth time since the beginning of the armed conflict.

According to the head of the EC, the European Union will expand the sanctions lists, and the package will also contain “new bans on imports and exports and actions to tighten the oil price ceiling” (the price ceiling of $60 per barrel was introduced in December by the G7 countries, the European Union, Australia and Switzerland. Russia responded by banning oil sales to countries and companies that comply with the limit). Previously, she named a ban on the import of Russian diamonds to Europe as one of the main points .

Von der Leyen did not specify the timing of the introduction of new restrictions. Politico wrote on November 1, citing four sources, that the European Commission would send proposals on them to EU countries next week (they must be supported by all 27 member states of the bloc), and the discussion could last “from one week until the end of the year.”

As reported by BLOOMBERG , Brussels is discussing an option with trade restrictions of $5.3 billion, which will affect, among other things, welding machines, chemicals, technologies used in the defense sector, metals and aluminum products. The blacklist will include 100 individuals and about 40 legal entities. According to the agency, the EU may impose additional sanctions on companies that help circumvent anti-Russian restrictions. Bloomberg reported that Poland and the Baltic countries planned to promote restrictions on the nuclear industry, but the idea met resistance.

At the end of October, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó promised that the country would not approve a new package of sanctions if it affected the country’s national interests. The minister called measures against Russian energy, oil, gas and nuclear energy the red line.

Russia considers the sanctions illegitimate. According to President Vladimir Putin, Western politicians “reach the point of absurdity” when it comes to restrictions, proposing, among other things, to ban the import of screwdrivers and needles into Russia (EUObserver previously reported on Lithuania’s idea to ban the EXPORT of buttons, nails, knitting needles and sewing needles). In September, Putin said the economy had recovered after restrictions. The Foreign Ministry estimated the EU's losses from sanctions and the curtailment of economic activity at $1.5 trillion.
