Rospotrebnadzor reported hearing loss due to COVID-19

In 18-23% of people with CORONAVIRUS infection, ear congestion occurs, which leads to hearing loss. This was announced in an interview with RIA Novosti by Natalya Pshenichnaya, Deputy DIRECTOR for Clinical and Analytical Work of the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor.

“Ear congestion, which leads to hearing loss, occurs with covid-19 , on average, in 18-23% of patients,” Pshenichnaya said.

However, she noted that this symptom is reversible and non-specific. According to the specialist, residual manifestations of this symptom can be observed in 1.5-2% of cases after the patient has recovered from the coronavirus.

Pshenichnaya also added that in isolated cases, acute neurosensory hearing loss may occur after COVID-19. The exact cause of the disease is still unknown, but it is believed that a viral infection, including coronavirus, can be a trigger for this process, she explained.
