The use of antibiotics in veterinary medicine in Germany decreased in 2022

Compared to 2021, usage decreased by 61 tons to 540 tons (-10.1%). Compared to 2011, the first year the data was recorded, the number of  antibiotics has decreased by about 68%.

The number of fluoroquinolones decreased by 0.6 tons compared to last year, to 5 tons (-10.1%).

The number of cephalosporins of the 3rd and 4th generations was 1.1 tons (-0.1 tons, -10.8%).

The number of polypeptide antibiotics (mainly colistin) also decreased, reaching 44 tons (-6.8 tons, -13.3%).

As in previous years, penicillins and tetracyclines account for the largest share of antibiotics used. Compared to 2021, a decrease of about 7 tons (penicillins) and 35 tons (tetracyclines) was recorded. In the case of sulfonamides, the reduction is 9 tons.
