Since April 27, Estonia has tightened penalties for moving cash and sanctioned goods across the Estonian-Russian border, the Russian Federal Customs Service reports.
Now, import and EXPORT of sanctioned goods, as well as cash in the amount of up to €10,000, is punishable by a fine of up to €2,400 or arrest for individuals, and by a fine of up to €400,000 for legal entities. “Moreover, such goods may be confiscated by Estonian customs officials as part of accelerated proceedings,” the department added.
In the case of transporting an amount exceeding €10,000, a repeated violation or the commission of a violation by a group of persons is classified as a criminal offence, for which punishment is provided for individuals - in the form of imprisonment for up to six years, for legal entities - a monetary penalty of up to €40 million.
Previously, carrying currency was punishable only if it was done intentionally, the Federal Customs Service reminded. However, from April 27, penalties will also be introduced for actions committed through negligence, the department noted.
According to Raigo Uukkivi, DIRECTOR General of the Estonian Tax and Customs Board, the agency's employees have received more effective levers to prevent the supply of resources needed to continue the conflict in Ukraine . "The broader goal of sanctions is to protect peace at the international level. The NTCB, as the entity applying sanctions , plays an important role in ensuring security," he emphasized.
In March 2022, the US and EU imposed a ban on the import of cash dollars and euros into RUSSIA. As reportedREUTERS last summer, citing customs data, from then until December 2023, dollars and euros worth about $2.3 billion were imported into the country.
