FAS/Sofia forecasts higher poultry MEAT consumption in 2024 due to improved consumer demand at both the retail and catering levels. Food inflation is under control and has been steadily declining since mid-2023, while consumer incomes have increased, supporting purchasing power. Monthly data from the Ministry of Agriculture indicate stable prices for frozen and chilled whole broilers at both wholesale and retail levels as of mid-June, with a difference of less than a percent compared to last year, supporting stable and growing consumption. However, these prices remain significantly below the EU average .
In addition, chicken meat imports increased by 3.1%, while exports (volume) fell by 26% in Q1 2024, indicating stronger domestic demand. Based on these data, broiler meat consumption is expected to grow in 2024 at a potentially higher rate than in 2023. The Ministry of Agriculture does not currently track duck meat consumption and/or prices , and there are no official data for it. Bulgarian duck meat imports are very small, while exports decreased in Q1 2024, indicating a slight increase in local sales.
