Italy uses new trap to combat ASF in wild boars

In September, ISPRA resumed experimental wild boar trapping sessions. The innovative trap is called PIG BRIG, it is easy to use and effective.

The tests are being carried out in the Natural Park of Bosco della Partecipanza and Grange Vercellesi. The first tests have given positive results and are part of the operational phase of the experimental project SuINNOVA - African Swine Fever - research into innovative technologies in the field of disease eradication, concerning the identification of the most appropriate wild boar capture protocols for the control of this disease.

The project is coordinated by the Experimental Zooprophylactic Institute of Piedmont, Liguria and Valle d'Aosta and is carried out in collaboration with ISPRA and the Piedmont-Po Protected Areas Management Service.

The aim of the project is to evaluate the effectiveness of PIG BRIG, its manageability and versatility, taking into account local conditions, the possibility of providing the necessary biosecurity conditions, the necessary personnel and the costs of use. The practical knowledge gained during the project will be summarized in a manual, accompanied by training courses for personnel involved in trapping.

The PIGBRIG trap is circular in shape and consists of a nylon net with square meshes, supported by trees and/or stakes and partially anchored to the ground by stakes. This type of trap has been specially designed to optimize the capture of wild boars in any environmental situation (from wooded areas, including mountainous areas, to marshy and/or low-lying agricultural areas). In fact, the trap allows for multiple captures, is easy to transport and can be set up anywhere by just two people.
