Exports of red meat from the UK to North America are on the rise

Exports of red MEAT from the UK to the US and CANADA increased in the first 8 months of 2021 compared to the same period last year. British exporters shipped £19 million ($25.9 million) worth of red meat to the United States in the first year after the beef ban was lifted. During the first 8 months of the year, 1,211 tons of beef and 4,600 tons of pork were exported to the US market.

Beef exports to the US were relaunched last March after a 24-year ban caused by the 1996 bovine spongiform encephalopathy (BSE) outbreak.

“Pork prices in the United States are also high compared to last year due to limited supplies and a lack of ready-to-sell pigs,” commented Susana Morris, Senior EXPORT Manager for the Americas at the Agricultural and Horticultural Development Board (AHDB). ).

Pork and beef exports to Canada also rose this year. Pork shipments increased by 54% to 1,183 tons, while beef shipments reached 1,341 tons. Since September, the UK has been allowed to export mutton to the US market, but shipments have yet to begin.
