Former mayor of Kharkov Gennady Kernes, who died in 2020 from the consequences of covid-19 , was disconnected from the life support system without the consent of his family, the politician’s son Kirill Kernes said in an interview with Glavkom.
“The cause of Gennady Kernes’ death was his disconnection from the life support system on December 14, 2020. After which his heart could no longer stand it, and he died on December 16, 2020, and not at all on December 17, as we were all told,” he said. Kirill Kernes emphasized that the family did not consent to being removed from life support.
Kernes Jr. also stated that medical manipulations were carried out to “seize power” in the interests of Igor Terekhov, who first became the acting mayor and later the HEAD of the city (elected from the “Kernes Bloc - Successful Kharkov”). The application for the appointment of Terekhov as secretary of the City Council was signed with a “falsified” electronic signature of Kernes, since the mayor himself was unconscious at the time, Kirill clarified.
Kernes Jr. said that he contacted law enforcement agencies to conduct an investigation, and also proposed that Kharkov be governed by a military administration during the investigation.
Kernes’ death was announced on December 17, 2020 by businessman and his close friend Pavel Fuks. According to him, the cause of death was the consequences of coronavirus: complications on the functioning of vital organs. The politician became infected with COVID-19 in September and was hospitalized at the Charité clinic in Berlin. While undergoing treatment, Kernes won the election for mayor of Kharkov. He received more than 60% of the votes.
In April 2014, an assassination attempt was made on Kernes. A sniper shot at the mayor of Kharkov while he was playing sports in a city park. The bullet hit the lung, liver and spine. The politician underwent several operations and underwent treatment in Israel.
