Public concern about the use of antibiotics in livestock has prompted the sector to take full action to reduce the use of antibiotics. In 2011, the Belgian Feed Association founded the Knowledge Center for Antimicrobial Consumption and Resistance in Animals (AMCRA), which has drawn up plans to reduce the use of antibiotics with various specific targets.

According to the first plan (Plan 2020), the animal feed sector was to halve the production of antibiotic feed by the end of 2017 compared to 2011. This goal was easily achieved. The second plan (Plan 2024) called for the reduction to increase to 75 percent by 2024.

The decrease was possible due to various sectoral initiatives such as a six-month comparative analysis of feeding methods, individual support for farmers, the introduction of e-prescriptions, a ban on colistin in medicated feed, etc.
