Hungary will not participate in financing arms supplies to Ukraine, and will not support sanctions against Russia in the nuclear field, the country's Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó said after a meeting with his European colleagues, reports the local portal hvg.hu.
According to him, the EU has proposed to allocate €5 billion this year for military assistance to Ukraine outside the EU budget, collecting it from member states. If necessary, they want to implement the same scheme in the future.
“Hungary does not want to participate in any decision aimed at this (military assistance to Ukraine. -),” said the head of the country’s Foreign Ministry. He indicated that participation in the EU plan would cost Hungary 23 billion forints (about €60 million).
Szijjártó noted that “military psychosis prevailed” at the ministerial meeting, and Hungary believes that it is impossible to resolve the conflict in Ukraine by military means and that Europe’s strategy in this regard cannot be considered successful.
Speaking about the thirteenth package of sanctions against Russia being prepared in the European Union, the minister said that “the policy of sanctions failed because it did not bring us closer to peace.” He noted that Budapest will not support sanctions in the nuclear field.
According to The Wall Street Journal, according to the new EU plan, which Szijjártó mentioned, members of the union are invited to contribute funds to a special fund, which will be used for joint purchases of drones, air defense missiles and ammunition for transfer to Ukraine, as well as training for its military. Then the funds spent will have to be compensated to EU members.
