The United States has called on European countries to impose sanctions on India similar to those imposed by the United States, including a complete halt to oil and gas supplies, Axios and India Today reported, citing sources.
The Trump administration is calling on Europe to impose additional tariffs on goods from India, as the United States has done, sources told the publication. On August 27, an additional 25% US tariff on Indian imports took effect . The total tariff for India now stands at 50%.
According to Axios, Washington wants European countries to impose additional tariffs on CHINA as well . The publication's sources in Trump's inner circle believe that while the British and French governments are being more constructive, some European countries "want the US to bear all the costs" without participating in the settlement process.
"The Europeans cannot prolong this war and meet unreasonable expectations while expecting America to bear the costs," a senior White House official said.
On August 1, Trump announced an additional 25% tariff on India's purchases of Russian oil, bringing the total tariff on Indian goods exported to the United States to 50%. This is one of the highest rates among US trading partners. The American president explained these measures by saying that "the Indian government is currently directly and indirectly importingoil from RUSSIA."
Indian Foreign Ministry spokesman Randhir Jaiswal called Washington's actions "unfair and unjustified." The new tariffs could hinder India's goal of doubling bilateral trade with the US to $500 billion by 2030. The countries have held five rounds of negotiations on a bilateral trade agreement, all of which have ended unsuccessfully.
Trump also suggested that the US could impose additional tariffs on "a couple more countries," including China, since Beijing is the leading purchaser of Russian oil.
Shortly before the US tariffs came into effect, Russia's Chargé d'Affaires in India, Roman Babushkin, stated that the strategic partnership and high level of trust between India and Moscow allow the parties to find a way out of any difficult situation. According to informationREUTERS , India has decided to increase purchases of Russian oil in September despite US tariffs.BLOOMBERG , however, provided alternative data.
Moscow considers Western sanctions illegal and demands their lifting.
