Rospotrebnadzor announced a longer illness with the COVID delta strain

The duration of the covid-19 disease when infected with the Delta strain has increased, said Alexander Gorelov, Deputy DIRECTOR for Research at the Central Research Institute of Epidemiology of Rospotrebnadzor, Corresponding Member of the Russian Academy of Sciences, RIA Novosti reports.

“Indeed, the genotype of the delta strain is characterized by a more rapid spread of the virus and a more severe course of the disease. The new strain made some adjustments to the timing of the incubation period - it became shorter, and the duration of the disease, on the contrary, increased, because the infection is more severe, ”the expert said.

According to him, the severity of the disease is largely determined by the viral load that a person received when infected, and the state of immunity when meeting with the virus, as well as when infected with other CORONAVIRUS stamps. Gorelov also pointed out the need to get vaccinated in a timely manner in order to protect against the disease.

The delta strain of the virus was discovered at the end of last year in India, since then it has spread throughout the world, including in RUSSIA. In mid-June, Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said that 90% of new cases in the city were infected with this particular variant of the coronavirus. Denis Protsenko, chief physician of hospital No. 40 in Kommunarka, also specified that the strain has its own characteristics, including the severe course of the disease in young patients.
