The source of the emergence of the omicron strain of CORONAVIRUS could be an infected patient who did not fully recover from the previous version of covid-19 , Maria Van Kerkhove, HEAD of the technical group of the emergency diseases division of the World HEALTH Organization (WHO), told the Financial Times newspaper.
An immunocompromised patient infected with coronavirus, who was not completely cured, could carry the virus in the body for a long time, due to which it replicated, the WHO representative explained one of the hypotheses under consideration.

She noted that experts still do not know the exact cause of the appearance of the omicron strain. Currently, the countries where the new strain has been identified are preparing to send samples to biosafety agencies around the world, Kerkhove explained. According to her, in two to three weeks, scientists will receive the results of studies on the effectiveness of existing vaccines against Omicron.
As scientists from the UK reported on November 24, the new strain was first identified in South Africa and Botswana. It contains 32 mutations that increase its infectivity and vaccine resistance, said Imperial College virologist Tom Peacock.
