The UK has banned its citizens and companies from buying metals from Russia, according to documents published by the country's government.

“A person must not directly or indirectly acquire metals that:
a) originate in Russia; or b) are in Russia,” the document says.

The prohibited list included copper, nickel, aluminum, zinc, lead, tin, tungsten, molybdenum, tantalum, magnesium, bismuth, cobalt, zirconium, antimony, manganese, beryllium, as well as metal ceramics and products made of base metals (for example, cutlery) .

The main part of the restrictions comes into force on December 15, and another part on December 26.

Bloomberg notes that trading of Russian metals on the London Metal Exchange (LME) will continue, and appropriate licenses have been obtained for this. “LME understands that the UK Government's intention in imposing the recent sanctions on Russian metals is (among other things) to prevent UK persons from purchasing physical Russian metals,” the agency quotes the exchange notice as saying.

The UK also announced that it would ban the import of Russian diamonds from January 1, 2024 . A similar statement was made earlier in December by the G7 countries (in addition to Britain, these are  Germany , Italy , Canada , France , Japan and the USA ).

In addition, the new package includes restrictions on the export of a number of goods that could be used for military or industrial purposes, including spare parts and electronics.

The Russian side considers the sanctions imposed against the country illegal. President Vladimir Putin said that they were designed to “rush the Russian economy in a rush,” but this did not work out. In September, he said the economic recovery from restrictions was complete.
