Philippines: ASF Red Zones Move to Ilocos Region

Red Zone Status

: Currently, "red zones" cover not only Ilocos Sur but also neighboring regions. Eight communities have been identified in La Union, seven in Ilocos Norte, and two in Pangasinan. These areas remain under strict control, with biosecurity measures in place to prevent the spread of the virus. Importantly, restrictions on the sale of pork and pork products have already been lifted in some "yellow zones," indicating a gradual improvement in the situation.

Control and Compensation Measures:

The Department of Agriculture (DoA) is actively working to compensate affected farmers. Specifically, approximately PHP 3.8 million has been allocated to 57 pig farmers from 17 villages in La Union whose livestock were affected by ASF . These measures are aimed at supporting farmers who have faced financial difficulties due to the loss of their livestock.

Prospects and Challenges:

The transition from "red" to "yellow" zones could be an important step toward restoring swine production in the Ilocos region. However, despite these positive changes, significant challenges remain. The need for continuous monitoring of the situation and adherence to biosecurity measures remains urgent. Farmers must be prepared for new challenges associated with potential disease outbreaks and follow expert recommendations.
