USDA analysts believe this Asian market is expected to see a 40% drop in hog numbers due to the ASF outbreak reported last year.

USDA analysts expect a sharp drop in Thailand's hog production. Since the country has confirmed an outbreak of ASF on farms, the consequences are expected to be severe at least in 2022. Thailand's pig production is expected to reach 12-13 million pigs in 2022, 35-40% less than the average annual production of about 19-20 million pigs before the outbreak of African swine fever.

Reduced hog production has been putting upward pressure on pork prices since 2019. Farm pig prices and retail pork prices rose to record levels in January. Pig prices on farms rose to 96 baht per kilogram ($2,885 per ton) in January 2022, up 27% from the same period last year. Meanwhile, retail pork prices rose to 190-200 baht per kilogram ($5.3), up 23% from the same period last year. Average retail pork prices are expected to increase by about 30% in 2022 compared to 2021 due to limited pig stocks during the ASF outbreak.
