Chicken prices have soared ahead of the start of grilling season. As beef production has slowed, other MEAT options favored during grilling season, like chicken and pork , have risen in price. Despite increased broiler chicken production and increased supply to meet demand, prices are still rising. Wholesale boneless, skinless chicken breasts were $ 1 more per pound than they were at this time last year — $2.75 per pound, compared with $1.75 per pound. Thighs, another summer grilling favorite, were 88 cents per pound, compared with 72 cents per pound last year.
This is not a huge change from recent years, but it highlights major differences in the meat market - beef production is falling, prices are rising; chicken production is rising, prices are continuing to rise.
