The fourth in history and first in the last 18 years summit of the Council of Europe, which began on May 16 in Reykjavik, decided to create a register of damage inflicted on Ukraine during a special military operation by Russia, Euronews reports.
The creation of the registry will be an important part of international initiatives to create a compensation mechanism for Ukraine. The Council of Europe will take the lead in its creation and provide the necessary legal support.
“I am very glad that we will have a registry, which is so important for the administration of justice. Justice is one of the conditions for a just world,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
On the second day of the summit, the leaders of European countries intend to discuss the "outlines of the compensation system."
The Council of Europe includes 46 states, this organization is completely independent and is not included in the system of the European Union, which now unites 27 countries.
In total, there were four summit meetings in the history of the Council of Europe before the Reykjavik summit: in 1993 in Vienna, in 1997 in Strasbourg and in 2005 in Warsaw.
