USAU invites schoolchildren to an intensive course in biotechnology

Children aged 14-17 who study and (or) live in the territory of the Sverdlovsk region are invited to participate in the educational course.
The organizers of the shift are the Ural State Agrarian University and the Golden Section Fund for Supporting Talented Children and Youth.
The program "Biological Objects of Biotechnology" is aimed at children who are interested in chemical and biological sciences, modern methods and techniques of agro-industrial and biotechnologies.
From June 11 to June 24, schoolchildren will have a rest in the country center "Tavatuy" and will take part in an extensive educational program. In an interactive format, children will learn a lot about the structure, diversity, ecological and economic significance of biological objects of biotechnology (viruses, bacteria, fungi, plants and animals), learn to influence the structure, composition, nutritional and biological value of finished products. Together with scientists, they will figure out how to breathe life into spent and “tired” soils, how to protect plants from diseases and pests. On specific examples, they will get acquainted with the substances and compounds used in the creation of food products of plant and animal origin that are useful for humans. The acquired knowledge will help the children, if they wish, to take part in the All-Russian competition of scientific and technological projects "Big Challenges".
“Participation in this educational program allows schoolchildren to expand their horizons and learn how to apply the acquired knowledge when creating their own projects. Every year, the best guys take part in the All-Russian Conference of the Ural State Agrarian University "On the Way to Knowledge", as well as in the All-Russian competition of scientific and technological projects "Big Challenges" of the Sirius Educational Center. Both events are included in the List of the Ministry of Education and enable schoolchildren to get additional points for the Unified State Examination when entering universities, ”explained Olga Sergeevna Chechenikhina, course leader, professor at the Department of Biotechnology and Food Products of the Ural State Agrarian University, DOCTOR of Biological Sciences.

it is worth noting that USAU representatives held the first intensive on ecology for schoolchildren in the summer of 2021. In the Tavatuy EC, the children learned how to conduct field research to study the diversity of flora and fauna, draw up passports for the area and water bodies, determine the physical and chemical parameters of water, anthropogenic climate change, use GIS technologies to create maps, and conduct microbiological teststo determine the quality of food and much more. And at the end of the shift, they defended their own environmental projects.
