WHO recommends a moratorium on revaccination against COVID

Rich countries have already exceeded their vaccination plan, while poor countries are falling short due to lack of drugs. Vaccine shortages in poor countries developed at a time when

Due to the lack of vaccines in poor countries, WHO recommends a moratorium on revaccination, the HEAD of the organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said at a briefing.

Ghebreyesus recalled that back in May, the World HEALTH Organization set a goal of vaccinating at least 10% of the population in every country in the world. In countries with a high level of development, where there is no shortage of drugs, this goal is exceeded. If in May 50 doses of the vaccine were administered for every 100 people in such states, then by the beginning of August the vaccination rate increased to almost 100 doses per 100 people - taking into account injections with the second component and revaccinations.

“Meanwhile, low-income countries have only been able to start giving 1.5 doses for every 100 people due to a lack of drugs. We urgently need to change the situation where most vaccines end up in high-income countries and move towards supplying most vaccines to low-income countries. Accordingly, the WHO calls for a moratorium on revaccination until at least the end of September to allow at least 10% of the population of each country to be vaccinated, ”he said.

The head of WHO also recommended that vaccine manufacturers pay attention to the COVAX program, under which drugs are provided to the poorest countries.
