Peskov predicted a boomerang effect for the EU when banning diamonds from Russia

The ban on the import of Russian diamonds, which the European Union plans to introduce, may have a negative impact on the Europeans themselves. This opinion was expressed by the press secretary of the Russian President Dmitry Peskov at a briefing, an RBC correspondent reports.

Peskov noted that plans to ban the supply of diamonds are a continuation of the search for some kind of sanctions solutions, which, according to the authors, will hit RUSSIA. “As a rule, it turns out that the boomerang effect is partially triggered and the interests of the Europeans themselves suffer,” he believes.

The Kremlin representative also noted that Russia has learned to find ways to minimize the negative impact of Western sanctions.

A representative of the European Commission told RBC on November 15 that the 12th package of anti-Russian sanctions being prepared by the European Union is aimed at “cutting Russia’s remaining income from diamond exports to Europe and partner countries.” “This is being done in very close cooperation with our G7 partners,” he said.

According to a representative of the European Commission, it accepted the proposals of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy on a package of sanctions and has already submitted it to the bloc countries for consideration. For restrictions to come into force, they must be approved by unanimous decision.

BLOOMBERG and REUTERS reported in mid-September that the G7 countries ( Great Britain , CANADA , France , Germany , Italy , Japan and the usa ) intend to agree on a ban on the import of Russian diamonds in the near future . According to the agencies, the restriction is planned to be introduced gradually from January 1, 2024.
