Spain begins clinical trials of echinacea to fight COVID-19

Scientists from the Center for Research in Molecular Medicine and Chronic Diseases (CiMUS) at the University of Santiago de Compostela are studying the suitability of purple coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) for the treatment of CORONAVIRUS, according to Heraldo de Aragón.

Called ECCO-2, the goal of the clinical trial is to see if the plant-based drug will be as effective in treating covid-19 as it is in treating the common cold, for which it is already being used.

Previous research has shown that echinacea extract may have an effect on the coronavirus. Aragonese and Galician scientists have received permission from the Spanish Agency for Medicines and Medical Devices to conduct clinical trials to study the effectiveness of echinacea (available in capsules) as an adjuvant treatment for COVID-19.

Scientists have named factors contributing to the emergence of new strains of COVID-19 Society

Scientists hypothesized that the use of an extract of this plant along with standard treatment will reduce the number of days of illness, reduce the risk of hospitalization and the development of late complications associated with the persistence of the virus. According to scientists, this tool can become a "simple, inexpensive and affordable option" for the treatment of COVID-19 at an early stage of the disease.
