According to a Philippine Department of Agriculture (DA-BAI) press release, municipal veterinary personnel and farm owners have taken swift action to contain the outbreak of avian influenza found at a duck farm in Baliuag, Bulacan, and quail farms in Kandaba and Pampanga.
“We have immediately implemented the necessary protocol to effectively contain the bird flu that has been found in ducks and quails in Baliuag, Bulacan and Kandaba, as well as Pampanga – mainly to prevent it from spreading to other areas,” said Agriculture Minister William Dar. .
DA-BAI has confirmed the presence of the H5N1 strain of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) in its Animal Disease Diagnosis Reference Laboratory (BAI-ADDRL). DA-BAI DIRECTOR Reildrin Morales said surveillance activities are ongoing for all types of poultry and there are no reports of the disease in chickens and turkeys.
He noted that the disease was first detected on January 6, 2022 in a duck farm during routine surveillance activities conducted by DA-BAI as part of its early warning system.
The second case was reported on 21 January at two commercial quail farms and on 27 January at a quail farm. A third case was reported on February 11 at two neighboring quail farms in Pampanga.
