The global nuclear industry remains “a bond of common sense”, uniting countries on the basis of advanced technologies, said Alexei Likhachev, CEO of the state corporation Rosatom, speaking on Monday, November 21, at the plenary session of the Atomexpo 2022 international forum in Sochi. This year, the key theme of the forum is defined as "Atomic Spring".
He noted that over the past three years, the international nuclear community has maintained its unity in the context of the CORONAVIRUS pandemic. “We have practically not severed a single connection – commercial, scientific with our partners – and we see a very interested response and a desire to overcome together the difficulties that today, unfortunately, are beginning to divide our planet according to different principles,” Likhachev said.
Hungary promised not to support sanctions against Gazprom and Rosatom Politics
“Oddly enough, the nuclear industry has become not only the bearer of a real, but not a declarative approach to the improvement of the planet. The global nuclear industry, at least for the moment, is still a certain bond of common sense, despite the fact that the planet is torn apart according to different principles: Europe - Asia, north - south, the collective West and not the collective West, ”added the head of Rosatom.
In relation to Rosatom and the Russian nuclear industry in general, Western sanctions have not been imposed since the start of Russia's special operation in Ukraine, unlike most other state-owned companies and sectors of the economy. Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Economic Relations of Hungary Peter Szijjarto, who also took part in the plenary session of Atomexpo, said that his country is consistently opposed to the imposition of sanctions against nuclear energy. He said that Hungary might consider obstruction of nuclear projects an encroachment on its sovereignty: “The country's energy balance is a matter of sovereignty. Each country decides these issues independently. <...> If someone tries to interfere with our nuclear projects, we will consider this an encroachment on our sovereignty, ”said the Hungarian foreign minister.
Shortly before the start of this session, Szijjarto wrote on his FACEBOOK page (banned in RUSSIA; owned by the Meta corporation, which is recognized as extremist) that Rosatom and Hungary are discussing the expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant. “The expansion of the Paks nuclear power plant is both a national strategic interest and a national security interest in Hungary,” he said.
Now, Paks, built according to the Soviet project, has four power units with VVER-440 reactors with a total capacity of about 2 GW, at the end of August, the Hungarian Atomic Energy Authority allowed Rosatom to build the 5th and 6th power units of this station ( their cost is estimated at about €12.5 billion). According to the minister, last week the parties discussed the necessary steps in the short and long term to count on these two new Paks power units by the end of the decade.
