The natural population decline for 2022 amounted to 599.6 thousand people. The indicator has dropped sharply compared to the pandemic anti-records of 2020 and 2021. The number of deaths decreased by 22%, births - by almost 7%.

At the end of 2022, the natural decline in the population of RUSSIA, that is, the excess of the number of deaths over the number of births, amounted to 599.6 thousand people. This follows from the preliminary data of Rosstat. The result was 42.5% lower than the decline in the pandemic 2021, which set an absolute record in the recent history of the country and reached 1.04 million people. it also turned out to be less than in 2020 (702 thousand people).

The excess of the number of deaths over the number of births is typical for modern Russia. It has been recorded every year since the 1990s. The only exception was 2013-2015, when there was a symbolic increase in the population, not exceeding 32 thousand people per year (since 2014, the figures began to take into account the population of Crimea and Sevastopol).

In 2022, the decline in the number of births accelerated compared to 2020-2021. At the end of the year, the number of births decreased by 6.9%, to 1.306 million people, having become the lowest since 2000. Rosstat, presenting the data, compares them with the operational data of 2021, but last summer the service traditionally clarified the demographic results for 2021. Compared to the final data for 2021 on the number of births (1.398 million), the preliminary figure for 2022 decreased by 6.6%.

The birth rate has also fallen (the number of births per 1,000 people) - it amounted to 9.0, although a year ago it was at the level of 9.6. Earlier, the Ministry of Labor warned that the coefficient could decrease.

The number of people born in Russia has been declining since 2015, according to Rosstat data. At the end of 2021, the reduction was 2.7%, and in 2020 the number of newborns decreased by 3%.

Mortality, on the contrary, showed a positive trend in 2022. The number of deaths decreased by 22%, to 1.906 million people. Nominally, this is a record reduction in the number of deaths in the history of Russia since the 1990s. However, in this case, the high base of 2021, which was characterized by “supermortality” from covid-19 , influenced . Compared to the pre-Covid 2019, the death rate in 2022 increased by 6%.

Together with data on the vital movement of the population, Rosstat cited statistics on marriages and divorces. The number of marriages in 2022 increased by 14%, to 1.05 million. The number of divorces grew less significantly - by 6%, to 683 thousand. The number of marriages in the country increased sharply in the fall of 2022 after the announcement of partial mobilization, in December the increase remained historical high - almost 25% compared to December of the previous year.

The decrease in mortality in the third year after the start of the CORONAVIRUS pandemic is due to the fact that both the authorities and the population have learned to deal with it, says Alexander Shcherbakov, professor at the Department of Labor and Social Policy of the RANEPA. Meanwhile, the rate of decline in the birth rate, according to the expert, causes concern. If partial mobilization affects the number of available men, then the number of women who could now give birth was greatly reduced by the demographic hole of the 1990s, Shcherbakov notes.

“The birth rate has dropped more than last year. The only positive thing is that the death rate is declining faster than the birth rate. The situation can be improved if, with the help of support measures, the total fertility rate is increased, that is, women who have already given birth are stimulated to give birth again,” he said.
